2022. St.Petersburg

Ballet initiation for the soloist dancer and drums on music of Iannis Xenakis and Petr Glavatskikh. Commissioned by the new stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater.

The themes of extremity, the end, death, and the liberation of the soul from an imperfect body are the main dramaturgical markers of our work. The very time in which we live unfolds us to the existential crisis related to the everydayness of death. It's no longer in the distance, on the border of generations, it's literally very near. That's why in our performance we don't work with metaphors of horror and extremity, we are actually stepping there. The personal act of diving inside the demonic component of the world is very important to us. And there, within this chthonic horror, through dancing to a crazy drumbeat, physically dying while performing, we rediscover ourselves. Addressing to death, we perceive it not as a limit, but as a transition, a return to the original source.

The work uses the music of Iannis Xenakis, a man who fused architecture and music, denying any distinction between the genres. He was comparing himself to an ancient Greek who had come to our time. The composer used mathematical methods to construct insanely irrational and metaphysically oriented music. His language was radically different from anything written in the twentieth century.

The choreographic score of the piece is based on the constant struggle of the bodily shell with the free soul. And when the soul finally manages to break free of its dungeon, 40 terrifying beats of the simantron (an ancient instrument in Greek Orthodox monasteries) await it. They slowly measure the end of the soul's ordeal and grant it eternal freedom, a return to its divine origin.
