2016. Amsterdam

A dance performance produced as part of the JULIDANS Lab at Stadsschouwburg in Amsterdam, premiered at the JULIDANS Festival 2016 and at DAS theatre (Academy of theatre and dance, Amsterdam). The work was created in collaboration with the actress and performer Sophie Guisset. After the premiere we continued working on the performance during our residency at Kunstencentrum BUDA Kortrijk in Belgium in September 2017.

The initial point of research in the work for the choreographer was the concept of facelessness / lack of face. The viewer encounters two bodies / non-human entities that are physically connected but at the same time strive to find their freedom. The authors are interested in a voyeuristic stance where the performers allow themselves to be observed but never look back at the viewer. The dramaturgy of the performance is a movement from the abstract form of the animalistic body to concrete human emotions, which are conveyed through movement and sound (laughter/crying). The work is built on a clearly structured choreography, the main focus of which is the constant balance between the human and the non-human, the recognizable and the abstract.
